Episode 24: How Do I Start a Career in Cybersecurity?

In episode 24 of Cybersecurity Where You Are, co-host Tony Sager poses the question that many people interested in the industry ask: How do I start a career in cybersecurity?

To offer some insight, co-host Sean Atkinson joins cybersecurity professionals Linnie Meehan and Thomas Sager. Together, the three share their personal experiences, offer advice to those interested in a cybersecurity career, and remind listeners that persistence is key.

A New Career

Meehan, a nine-year veteran in cybersecurity, got her start as a threat analyst. But cybersecurity wasn't always her career path. Starting in healthcare as a paramedic, Meehan knew her life would take her in a different direction. The "love" for her job simply wasn't there. After investing some time in learning more about cybersecurity she decided to make the change. "It just clicked," she says. Currently, Meehan is a threat hunter and has sage advice for anyone looking to join the cybersecurity community.

With a similar, non-traditional start into the industry, Thomas Sager began his journey into cybersecurity through an internship with the National Board of Information Security Examiners, a nonprofit that later merged with the Center for Internet Security. Thomas has a background in economics and now works on developing mappings to the CIS Critical Security Controls.

Our guests and co-hosts shared valuable advice for those looking to explore a career in cybersecurity. Don't be afraid of failure. And if you do fail, get up and try again. For more, listen to episode 24 of Cybersecurity Where You Are
