CARSON CITY, Nev. and EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y., July 22, 2020 – A new Nevada statute, which becomes effective on January 1, 2021, will revise state requirements relating to personally identifiable information (PII) collected by governmental agencies. The new law will require a government agency, if it maintains records that contain PII about a resident of the state, to comply with specific global state-of-the-art cybersecurity best practices.

To support the implementation of the new statute, the Center for Internet Security, Inc. (CIS®) is pleased to announce a free webinar panel titled, “How Nevada Can Spotlight its Leadership in Data Security,” on July 30, 2020 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. PST. The webinar will highlight the simplified and effective approach to improving cybersecurity adopted by the new law. Senator Gansert will also preview an upcoming bill for 2021, that offers a data protection incentive to Nevada businesses.

Nevada joins Ohio and California as the first states to define reasonable security. The law requires state agencies in Nevada to comply with the CIS Controls® or with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework as its minimum standard of information security. The CIS Controls can also provide a blueprint to private-sector organizations intending to voluntarily increase their cybersecurity posture.

“The effort emphasizes the benefits to the private sector of voluntarily adopting the CIS Controls, an internationally-recognized set of data security practices,” said Tony Sager, CIS Senior Vice President and Chief Evangelist. “It further reinforces Nevada’s leadership position in data security and cyber defense.”

The CIS Controls are a prioritized and simplified set of cybersecurity safeguards created to stop today’s most pervasive and dangerous cyber-attacks. They are developed, refined, and validated by a global community of cybersecurity experts. They are the definition of an effective cybersecurity program. Implementing the CIS Controls prevents 80 percent of known cyber-attacks and data intrusions.

How Nevada Can Spotlight its Leadership in Data Security,” will offer tips on how to implement the standards, and an overview of how the standards protect the data. The 90-minute session will consist of two panels: a government panel with Nevada Senator Heidi Gansert and Shaun Rahmeyer, Administrator, Nevada Office of Cyber Defense Coordination, and a private sector panel represented by Nevada businesses to include: Paul Enos, CEO, Nevada Trucking Association, Christian Moore, Attorney, Lemons Grundy & Eisenberg, Dr. John Soumi, DDS, YouCallMD, and Randy Robison, CenturyLink.
