National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2017 Wrap up
October is always a busy month at CIS, and this year was no exception. Our fall schedule was packed with blog posts, videos, social media events, and more in celebration of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). Here are a few highlights you won’t want to miss.
On the blog
Each week of NCSAM 2017 focused on a different theme. Our subject matter experts and CIS executive staff teamed up to share new ideas and cybersecurity tips about these themes on our blog. Looking for guidance to protect yourself from cyber attacks? Start with these simple tips. Next, learn how to be a smart user in a world of smart devices.
We created an infographic to educate students and young professionals about the importance of choosing a career in the cybersecurity industry. Provided newcomers to the field career tips from an industry veteran, while CISOs can learn how to develop a culture of cybersecurity with CIS Controls 1 & 2. Finally, learn from CIS Chairman and Interim CEO John Gilligan why it’s essential to protect critical infrastructure from escalating cyber threats.
Partnerships & honors
On October 11, CIS was honored to receive the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA)® Organization of the Year Award. ISSA is a non-profit organization for information security professionals committed to promoting effective cybersecurity around the world. The ISSA International Awards Selection Committee cited CIS’ “contributions to the community and sustained membership in the association” as criteria for its decision.
On October 26, CIS and the University of Maryland School of Public Policy (SPP) announced a multidisciplinary partnership for cybersecurity research. Through this partnership, CIS and SSP will pursue joint research initiatives, share specialized facilities and equipment, create opportunities for student engagement, and more.
For the first two weeks of NCSAM, our social media feeds were flooded with cybersecurity tips from CIS employees. Which one was your favorite?
CIS also held its first Twitter chat this month! Participants discussed cybersecurity in the workplace using #AskCISecurity and #CyberAware. Throughout the entire month, we shared new CIS Controls videos to help users prioritize and implement better cybersecurity strategies.
