Multiple Vulnerabilities in Apple Products Could Allow for Arbitrary Code Execution

OVERVIEW:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iCloud for Windows, iTunes for Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Safari, watchOS, tvOS, macOS, and Xcode. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution.

  • iTunes is a media player available for Windows.
  • iOS is a mobile operating system for mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  • iPadOS is the successor to iOS 12 and is a mobile operating system for iPads.
  • Safari is a web browser available for macOS.
  • watchOS is the mobile operating system for the Apple Watch and is based on the iOS operating system.
  • tvOS is an operating system for the fourth-generation Apple TV digital media player.
  • macOS is a desktop operating system for Macintosh computers
  • Xcode is an integrated development environment (IDE) for macOS.

Successful exploitation of the most severe of these vulnerabilities could result in arbitrary code execution within the context of the application, an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged-on user, or the bypassing of security restrictions. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow the attacker to execute remote code on the affected system.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in iCloud for Windows, iTunes for Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Safari, watchOS, tvOS, macOS, and Xcode. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution. Details of these vulnerabilities are as follows:

  • A buffer overflow was addressed with improved bounds checking. (CVE-2020-3909, CVE-2020-3911)
  • A buffer overflow was addressed with improved size validation. (CVE-2020-3910)
  • Logic issues were addressed with improved restrictions. (CVE-2020-3885, CVE-2020-3887, CVE-2020-3888, CVE-2020-3906, CVE-2020-9784)
  • Logic issues were addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2020-3881, CVE-2020-3889, CVE-2020-3891, CVE-2020-9770)
  • A memory consumption issue was addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2020-3899)
  • Memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2020-3895, CVE-2020-3900, CVE-2020-3903)
  • Memory corruption issues were addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2020-3904, CVE-2020-9785)
  • A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved input validation. (CVE-2020-3892, CVE-2020-3893, CVE-2020-3905)
  • Memory initialization issues were addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2020-3914, CVE-2020-3919)
  • An access issue was addressed with additional sandbox restrictions. (CVE-2020-3916)
  • An information disclosure issue was addressed with improved state management. (CVE-2019-14615)
  • An injection issue was addressed with improved validation. (CVE-2020-3884)
  • An input validation issue was addressed with improved input validation. (CVE-2020-3902)
  • An issue existed in the handling of tabs displaying picture in picture video. The issue was corrected with improved state handling. (CVE-2020-9775)
  • An issue existed in the selection of video file by Mail. The issue was fixed by selecting the latest version of a video. (CVE-2020-9777)
  • An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved input validation. (CVE-2020-3907, CVE-2020-3908, CVE-2020-3912)
  • A permissions issue existed. This issue was addressed with improved permission validation. (CVE-2020-3913)
  • A race condition was addressed with additional validation. (CVE-2020-3894)
  • Type confusion issues were addressed with improved memory handling. (CVE-2020-3897, CVE-2020-3901)
  • Use after free issues were addressed with improved memory management. (CVE-2020-3851, CVE-2020-9768, CVE-2020-9783)
  • A validation issue was addressed with improved input sanitization. (CVE-2019-8853)
  • Multiple issues were addressed with a new entitlement. (CVE-2020-3917, CVE-2020-9776)
  • Multiple issues were addressed by updating Vim to version 8.1.1850. (CVE-2020-9769)
  • An issue was addressed by clearing website permission prompts after navigation. (CVE-2020-9781)
  • An issue was addressed with improved deletion. (CVE-2020-3890)
  • An issue was addressed with improved handling of icon caches. (CVE-2020-9773)
  • An issue was resolved by clearing application previews when content is deleted. (CVE-2020-9780)
  • An issue was addressed by updating to sudo version 1.8.31. (CVE-2019-19232)
  • An issue was addressed with improved checks. (CVE-2020-3883)

RECOMMENDATIONS:

We recommend the following actions be taken:

  • Apply appropriate patches provided by Apple to vulnerable systems immediately after appropriate testing.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to download, accept, or execute files from un-trusted or unknown sources.
  • Remind users not to visit untrusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
  • Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
